Revision as of 16:32, 20 March 2026

Vehicles are self-propelling machines designed for quick and safe transportation of people (up to 10 at the same time) and other cargo (trunk capacity varies).

They have to be refueled (using SECs or MFCs) and repaired (using a Tool) from time to time, and should not be operated without a license (which can be obtained at the Junkyard).

Basic facts

Bot-O-Drive, the driver's license test robot at the Junkyard
  • Driving without a license has a high chance of resulting in a crash (30%).
  • Driving under influence adds another 1% to the probability of crashing.
  • Traveling in a vehicle gives you the highest possible chance of avoiding random encounters regardless of your Outdoorsman level.
  • If you drive into a turn-based encounter with ongoing combat, you will not be able to enter your vehicle and leave. It's best to drive with combat set to real-time mode only.
  • By default, cars can be refueled with either MFCs or SECs but for an additional fee, T-Ray can rig them to also accept Rot Gut.
  • To refuel a vehicle: (1) put some Micro Fusion Cells, Small Energy Cells (SEC), or (if you have the engine upgrade) Rot Gut in your inventory; (2) click and hold the left mouse button on the vehicle; (3) from the drop‑down menu, select the bag icon; (4) in the inventory window that appears, click on the fuel you wish to use.
  • Repairing your vehicle requires a Tool. Unlike regular items, cars can't lose maximum durability so you can fail as many repair attempts as you need.
  • To park your car safely, always use private locations (bases). If you park it in a random encounter or a town, it can be lockpicked and stolen by anyone who stumbles upon it.
  • A vehicle and/or its trunk can be lockpicked (by using the Robbery skill on it) to remove the need for a key, trading (often illusory) safety for convenience.
  • You can use a Lock on a lockpicked vehicle to re-lock it.
  • The owner can use the Science skill on a Fingerlock-protected vehicle to enable shared access, allowing others to register their fingerprints via the Traps skill. Fingerlock access is account-wide.
  • Every vehicle carries its owner's name on its license plate.
  • You cannot rename your vehicle directly, but you can put a label on its trunk via the EBS system.
  • Be careful not to lock your car key in a trunk by accident! Unless you have a duplicate key lying around, you'll need to pick the lock to regain trunk access.
  • T-Ray can duplicate your keys for 1000 local currency. Just talk to him and select the right dialog option when holding a key in hand.
  • To sell your car, talk to T-Ray in Reno (Gas Station entry point), Todd at the Junkyard (8:22), or any caravan cart dealer while holding the key to the car you want to sell in your active hand slot. The car being sold must be on same map as the car dealer.
  • Vehicle spawn points are separate from character spawn points, which can be useful e.g. in a flare trap.

Getting a driver's license

In order to operate your vehicle safely, you'll need a driver's license, which requires passing a driving test administered by Bot-O-Driver in Junkyard.

Getting a pilot's license

If you're planning to get a Vertibird, a regular driver's license won't do: you'll need a pilot's license to fly it safely.

Pilot's license is separate from driver's license and can be obtained in Las Vegas. The test involves completing an obstacle course that will instakill you if you make any mistakes so be careful.

Buying your first car

There are many considerations when it comes to picking your vehicle: they each have a different passenger limit, rate of deterioration, fuel efficiency, maximum speed, appearance, not to mention price! Speaking of price, while T-Ray is happy to accept just cash, Junkyard Todd will require a Fuel Cell Controller in addition to your hard-earned caps.

Luckily for you, we have prepared a handy comparison table to allow you to make an informed choice:

Vehicle list

T-Ray, the New Reno car salesman
Junkyard in all of its glory
Vertibird in Navarro, you can have one just like it!

These are the different vehicles you can buy in-game.

Vertibird procurement

  1. Collect Vertibird Plans, Small Piece of Machinery, NavCom Parts, Fuel Cell Regulator, Excavator Chip, 10 million caps, 400 MFCs
  2. Get pilot's license
  3. Find and pay off the Vertibird mechanic in Junkyard.
  4. Exit to the world map and look for a small green circle nearby.
  5. Enter the location and use the collected items on the broken Vertibird
