Vehicles give their users the ability to move much faster on the world map. They have to be refueled and repaired from time to time.
+
Vehicles are self-propelling machines designed for quick and safe transportation of people (up to 10 at the same time) and other cargo (trunk capacity varies).

Important Notes
+
They have to be refueled (using SECs or MFCs) and repaired (using a Tool) from time to time, and should not be operated without a license.
* Driving a car without license can cause an car crash 30%

* Driving  a car under alcohol effects can cause an car crash 1%

* You can park a vehicle in a random encounter, leave it there and still get back to it from the map (unless someone else finds it and steals it).

* When you park your car in a random encounter, everyone who is traveling nearby can also find it and take it.

* Parking in towns is also a bad idea because everyone can Lockpick your car and drive away.

* To park your care safely, always use private locations such as Bases, Tents, or houses.

* All vehicles have max Outdoorsman which overrides the driver's OD skill.

* Leader's Charisma is ignored when traveling by a car.

* Vehicles have a different spawn point than characters, and this can be useful, for example, in a Flare Trap.

* Vehicles behave differently in Turn-Based and Real-Time combat.

* Using the Science skill on a vehicle will enable you to check the Deterioration, Key number, and fuel supply of a vehicle without having to take it to the world map.

* Use a Tool to improve a vehicle's condition.

* A vehicle can be lock-picked, after which the key is no longer needed to drive it.

* You can use a Lock on a lock-picked vehicle to "fix" the lock.

* Vehicle prices are always the same (per model) when purchased from NPCs.

* Be careful not to put keys in a trunk because the key will be locked in that trunk and you'll need to Lockpick the trunk to get the key back out.

* Every vehicle purchased or a new lock installed will display the player's name on the license plate.

Getting a Vehicle
+
Basic facts
You can buy vehicles for smoother travels across the map. Some of them are ready to drive, and some require a working FCC. Each one has passenger limit, and different rates of Deterioration and fuel consumption. T-Ray in New Reno sells certain vehicles that are ready to drive. Junkyard Todd sells a different variety of vehicles, over on the coast north of San Francisco, but you'll need a working FCC to buy one of his. You can also trade with other players, or get lucky enough to find a Special Encounter with a Vertibird.
+

 +
*Driving without a license has a high chance of resulting in a crash (30%).
 +
*Driving under the influence adds another 1% to the probability of crashing.
 +
*Traveling in a vehicle gives you the highest possible chance of avoiding random encounters regardless of your Outdoorsman level.
 +
*If you drive into a turn-based encounter with ongoing combat, you will not be able to enter your vehicle and leave so it's best to drive with combat set to real-time mode only; you can use the <code>~combatmode rt</code> command to do so while <code>~combatmode tb</code> lets you change back to turn-based.
 +
*By default, cars can be refueled with either MFCs or SECs but T-Ray can rig them to also accept alcohol.
 +
*To refuel a vehicle: (1) put some Micro Fusion Cells, Small Energy Cells, or (if you have the engine upgrade) alcohol in your inventory; (2) click and hold the left mouse button on the vehicle; (3) from the drop‑down menu, select the bag icon; (4) in the inventory window that appears, click on the fuel you wish to use.
 +
*Repairing your vehicle requires a Tool. Unlike regular items, cars can't lose maximum durability so you can fail as many repair attempts as you need.
 +
*To park your car safely, always use private locations (bases). If you park it in a random encounter or a town, it can be lockpicked and stolen by anyone who stumbles upon it.
 +
*A vehicle and/or its trunk can be lockpicked (by using the Robbery skill on it) to remove the need for a key, trading (often illusory) safety for convenience.
 +
*You can use a Lock on a lockpicked vehicle to re-lock it.
 +
*The owner can use the Science skill on a Fingerlock-protected vehicle to enable shared access, allowing others to register their fingerprints via the Traps skill. Fingerlock access is account-wide.
 +
*Every vehicle carries its owner's name on its license plate.
 +
*You cannot rename your vehicle directly, but you can put a label on its trunk via the EBS system.
 +
*Be careful not to lock your car key in a trunk by accident! Unless you have a duplicate key lying around, you'll need to pick the lock to regain trunk access.
 +
*To sell your car, talk to T-Ray in Reno (Gas Station entry point), Todd at the Junkyard (8:22), or any caravan cart dealer while holding the key to the car you want to sell in your active hand slot. The car being sold must be on same map as the car dealer.
 +
*Vehicle spawn points are separate from character spawn points, which can be useful e.g. in a flare trap.

Getting a pilot's license
T-Ray in New Reno
+
If you're planning to get a Vertibird, a regular driver's license won't do: you'll need a pilot's license to fly it safely.
You can buy certain vehicles from T-Ray in New Reno (Gas Station area, at the north-east) that do not require you to provide a working Fuel Cell Controller. With Currency in your inventory, talk with T-Ray and you'll be able to buy a vehicle. The vehicle will show up immediately in T-Ray's garage, and you'll have a key in your inventory. Each Vehicle Key has a unique key number that matches its vehicle.

+
Pilot's license is separate from driver's license and can be obtained in Las Vegas. The test involves completing an obstacle course that will instakill you if you make any mistakes so be careful.

Buying your first car
Todd in Junkyard
+
There are many considerations when it comes to picking your vehicle: they each have a different passenger limit, rate of deterioration, fuel efficiency, maximum speed, appearance, not to mention price! Speaking of price, while T-Ray is happy to accept just cash, Junkyard Todd will require a Fuel Cell Controller in addition to your hard-earned caps.
The only other NPC vehicle merchant is Todd in the Junkyard, a location on the coast north of San Francisco. Todd has a garage there and will offer to fix up certain other vehicles for you that T-Ray does not offer, but he requires a Fuel Cell Controller first. Bring the part to Todd along with Caps, and you will be able to buy one of his vehicles. The vehicle you buy from Todd will show up just outside his garage and you will have the key in your inventory.

Special and Random Encounters
+
Luckily for you, we have prepared a handy comparison table to allow you to make an informed choice:
From time to time you might find a dot on the map that you do not recognize, where a player character has parked a vehicle and left it there too long. Sometimes it's where a bunch of people parked their cars, maybe to go do Town Control in a nearby city. In some cases, they might be abandoned vehicles.

Using a Vehicle
+
Vehicle list
With the vehicle's key in your inventory, just click on the vehicle to move on the worldmap with it. Players that have tagged you will have an option to follow you, if they are close enough. You can't go to worldmap in a vehicle without fuel. Lockpick works also, see Important Notes above.

Vehicle Maintenance
+

If your vehicle runs out of fuel it will stop on the world map. To refuel a vehicle, click on it to use the inventory (bag) icon and then select Small Energy Cells or Micro Fusion Cells in your inventory. Alternately, you can refuel a vehicle with Rot Gut if the vehicle has the Rot Gut Engine Upgrade. You will also have to repair it from time to time (Using the Repair skill) with a Tool or Super Tool Kit in your hand. Failing will not hurt the vehicle

New Keys
+
The table below shows the different vehicles you can buy in-game.
T-Ray will make a copy of your Vehicle Key, for 1000 Currency. Just talk to him and select the right option when holding a key in hand. If someone else gets your vehicle key, they can drive your vehicle if they find it wherever you parked it. Some players prefer keyless vehicles for convenience. A vehicle's key also opens the vehicle's trunk.

Selling
+
*Todd won't tell you about the cars he has available unless you have an FCC in your inventory, and even then he'll only offer to make you a Cockroach.
To sell your car, you need to visit someone who will be interested in this. Talk with T-Ray or Junkyard Todd in the Junkyard or any caravan dealer when holding key to car in hand. Keep in mind that car must be on same map, as car dealer.
+
*To gain access to the full list of Junkyard vehicles, you need to use the "<code>Do you have anything special?</code>" dialog option after the offer to "assemble the car" for 1,000 caps is made.

Originally developed by the Enclave. With its powerful helicopter rotors, the Vertibird it's the quickest vehicle in the game and one of the Enclave's most powerful pieces of technology. It is the only vehicle that flies, and thus allows you to travel over water. While the Brotherhood of Steel is still patrolling in Hummers, the Enclave can go anywhere quickly overhead, and so can you! It is possible to fly over the ocean and to islands where tents, houses and bases can be built. Caution: Even in a Vertibird, forced Random Encounters can force you to land, regardless of flight.

Vehicles are self-propelling machines designed for quick and safe transportation of people (up to 10 at the same time) and other cargo (trunk capacity varies).

They have to be refueled (using SECs or MFCs) and repaired (using a Tool) from time to time, and should not be operated without a license.

Basic facts

Bot-O-Driver, the driver's license test robot at the Junkyard
 • Driving without a license has a high chance of resulting in a crash (30%).
 • Driving under the influence adds another 1% to the probability of crashing.
 • Traveling in a vehicle gives you the highest possible chance of avoiding random encounters regardless of your Outdoorsman level.
 • If you drive into a turn-based encounter with ongoing combat, you will not be able to enter your vehicle and leave so it's best to drive with combat set to real-time mode only; you can use the ~combatmode rt command to do so while ~combatmode tb lets you change back to turn-based.
 • By default, cars can be refueled with either MFCs or SECs but T-Ray can rig them to also accept alcohol.
 • To refuel a vehicle: (1) put some Micro Fusion Cells, Small Energy Cells, or (if you have the engine upgrade) alcohol in your inventory; (2) click and hold the left mouse button on the vehicle; (3) from the drop‑down menu, select the bag icon; (4) in the inventory window that appears, click on the fuel you wish to use.
 • Repairing your vehicle requires a Tool. Unlike regular items, cars can't lose maximum durability so you can fail as many repair attempts as you need.
 • To park your car safely, always use private locations (bases). If you park it in a random encounter or a town, it can be lockpicked and stolen by anyone who stumbles upon it.
 • A vehicle and/or its trunk can be lockpicked (by using the Robbery skill on it) to remove the need for a key, trading (often illusory) safety for convenience.
 • You can use a Lock on a lockpicked vehicle to re-lock it.
 • The owner can use the Science skill on a Fingerlock-protected vehicle to enable shared access, allowing others to register their fingerprints via the Traps skill. Fingerlock access is account-wide.
 • Every vehicle carries its owner's name on its license plate.
 • You cannot rename your vehicle directly, but you can put a label on its trunk via the EBS system.
 • Be careful not to lock your car key in a trunk by accident! Unless you have a duplicate key lying around, you'll need to pick the lock to regain trunk access.
 • To sell your car, talk to T-Ray in Reno (Gas Station entry point), Todd at the Junkyard (8:22), or any caravan cart dealer while holding the key to the car you want to sell in your active hand slot. The car being sold must be on same map as the car dealer.
 • Vehicle spawn points are separate from character spawn points, which can be useful e.g. in a flare trap.

Getting a driver's license

In order to operate your vehicle safely, you'll need a driver's license, which requires passing a driving test administered by Bot-O-Driver in Junkyard.

Getting a pilot's license

If you're planning to get a Vertibird, a regular driver's license won't do: you'll need a pilot's license to fly it safely.

Pilot's license is separate from driver's license and can be obtained in Las Vegas. The test involves completing an obstacle course that will instakill you if you make any mistakes so be careful.

Buying your first car

There are many considerations when it comes to picking your vehicle: they each have a different passenger limit, rate of deterioration, fuel efficiency, maximum speed, appearance, not to mention price! Speaking of price, while T-Ray is happy to accept just cash, Junkyard Todd will require a Fuel Cell Controller in addition to your hard-earned caps.

Luckily for you, we have prepared a handy comparison table to allow you to make an informed choice:

Junkyard in all of its glory

The table below shows the different vehicles you can buy in-game.

 • Todd won't tell you about the cars he has available unless you have an FCC in your inventory, and even then he'll only offer to make you a Cockroach.
 • To gain access to the full list of Junkyard vehicles, you need to use the "Do you have anything special?" dialog option after the offer to "assemble the car" for 1,000 caps is made.

Vertibird procurement

 1. Collect Vertibird Plans, Small Piece of Machinery, NavCom Parts, Fuel Regulator, Excavator Chip, 10 million caps, 400 MFCs.
 2. Get a pilot's license.
 3. Go to Junkyard and pay 10 million caps.
 4. Exit to the world map and look for a small green circle nearby.
 5. Enter the location and use your painstakingly collected items on the broken Vertibird.

Supporter cars

Supporter cars are only available as rewards, usually for supporting the game. They can transport as many players as the current party size limit allows, are exceptionally fast and durable, and can store up to 50 item stacks. Differences between them are purely cosmetic.

T-Ray, the New Reno car salesman

T-Ray in New Reno offers a few choice services for your vehicle. Just bring it to his garage (key in hand) and he'll sort you out.
